Pressure Gradients Fueled Tropical Storm Alberto Across the Gulf Coast
Tropical Storm Alberto emerged in mid-June 2024 as a broad Central American Gyre drifted over warm Bay of Campeche waters. With a powerful surface high parked over the eastern United States, a steep pressure gradient drove persistent easterly winds across the northern Gulf. The storm organized on June 19 and came ashore near Tampico, Mexico, the next morning with 45-knot winds. Its expansive wind field shoved water into the Texas and Louisiana coasts, while heavy rain across Mexico turned deadly.
Bay of Campeche Genesis: How the Central American Gyre Spawned Alberto
The seeds of Alberto were sown around June 15, when the Central American Gyre (CAG) anchored across Central America. Deep convection and low-level vorticity pushed northwest across the Yucatán Peninsula, then consolidated over abnormally warm waters in the Bay of Campeche by June 17. Surface and scatterometer data revealed a broad low-pressure center roughly 90 nautical miles northwest of Ciudad del Carmen. At this stage, the circulation was elongated from northwest to southeast, with a wide swath of lowered pressure but only weak winds near the center.
Steering initially came from a mid-to-upper-level trough over Texas, which tugged the disturbance northward until a building ridge from the southern U.S. forced a sharp westward turn on June 19. Fueled by ample oceanic heat, convection quickly organized, and the National Hurricane Center officially designated the system as Tropical Storm Alberto at 10 a.m. CDT. Given its extraordinary breadth, the storm's strongest winds remained displaced hundreds of miles north of the center, setting the stage for coastal flooding far from the circulation core.
Tight Pressure Gradient, Broad Inundation: Alberto's Coastal Legacy
What made Alberto uniquely hazardous was the extreme pressure gradient between the cyclone and a stubborn high-pressure system over the eastern United States. That tight gradient compressed isobars across the northern Gulf, producing a prolonged easterly wind fetch. Even with the storm center far to the south, coastal communities in southeast Texas and southwest Louisiana endured repeated squalls with gusts of 40–45 mph. The persistent wind stress drove water levels 2.5–3.0 feet above mean higher high water, causing minor to moderate flooding along the coast and saltwater intrusion into marshes.
Alberto crossed the coast near Tampico just before dawn on June 20 with maximum sustained winds of 50 mph (45 knots). After landfall, the fast-moving system raced across central Mexico, where mountainous terrain tore it apart by that afternoon. Yet its short life caused deadly impacts: five direct fatalities in Mexico and one storm surge–related death in Texas. Tropical Storm Alberto stands as a reminder that broad, lopsided cyclones can wreak havoc well beyond their nominal center.
