Hurricane Beatriz (2023): A Retrospective Analysis
Formation and Meteorological History
Hurricane Beatriz originated from the same tropical wave that spawned Atlantic Tropical Storm Bret. After Bret dissipated over the central Caribbean Sea on June 24, the wave continued westward, crossing Central America on June 25 and entering the eastern Pacific on June 26. There, it combined with a broad area of low pressure. Convection gradually organized, and by June 28, banding features increased. The system was designated Tropical Depression Two-E at 0600 UTC on June 29, about 210 nautical miles southeast of Acapulco, Mexico. It strengthened into Tropical Storm Beatriz six hours later.
Beatriz moved west-northwestward to northwestward, steered by a ridge over Mexico. It underwent rapid intensification in an environment of light-to-moderate northeasterly shear, very warm sea-surface temperatures, and abundant mid-level moisture. Beatriz became a hurricane approximately 30 hours after genesis, reaching its peak intensity of 75 knots (85 mph) at 1800 UTC on June 30, about 100 nautical miles southeast of Manzanillo. The hurricane then weakened due to land interaction and increased shear. It made landfall as a 55-knot tropical storm near Manzanillo International Airport around 0600 UTC on July 1. The system quickly dissipated over the high terrain of Mexico by 1200 UTC the same day.
Impact and Damages
Beatriz brought tropical-storm-force winds and locally heavy rainfall to portions of southwestern Mexico. The storm caused flooding and mudslides, particularly in the states of Colima, Jalisco, and Michoacán. According to reports, there were four fatalities attributed to the storm, and damage was considered minimal overall. The storm surge was estimated at 0.3 meters, and rainfall accumulations reached up to 379 mm in some areas. The Global Disaster Alert and Coordination System (GDACS) rated the humanitarian impact as low, with no people exposed to Category 1 winds or higher. However, over 105,000 people were potentially affected by tropical-storm-force winds.
Government Response and Relief Efforts
Mexican authorities urged residents in the impact zone to remain indoors until the worst of the weather passed. The National Hurricane Center (NHC) issued regular advisories, and the Mexican government activated emergency protocols. Shelters were opened in coastal communities, and relief supplies were pre-positioned. The U.S. Air Force Reserve conducted reconnaissance flights to provide data for forecasting. After the storm, assessments were conducted to evaluate damage and coordinate recovery efforts. The quick dissipation of Beatriz limited the need for large-scale relief operations.
