Meteorological History

Tropical Cyclone Cheneso formed over the southwestern Indian Ocean on 19 January 2023. It made landfall in Madagascar as a tropical storm near the northern coast on the same day, bringing heavy rains and strong winds. The system then traversed the island, emerging into the Mozambique Channel on 24 January, where it intensified into a tropical cyclone. Cheneso reached peak intensity with maximum sustained winds of 74 km/h before weakening and eventually dissipating on 29 January. The storm's slow movement over Madagascar resulted in prolonged rainfall, exacerbating flooding.

Impact and Damages

Cheneso caused widespread devastation across northern and central Madagascar. The storm affected approximately 90,000 people, with 33 confirmed fatalities and 20 missing. Over 34,000 individuals were displaced, and more than 13,000 houses were damaged or destroyed. The agricultural sector suffered heavily, with an estimated 141,000 hectares of cropland flooded, representing about 4% of the country's total agricultural land. The Betsiboka delta rice and fishing zone (Zone 5) was particularly hard-hit, disrupting the peak growing season for rice and affecting fishing livelihoods.
