Cyclone Michaung Dumped Record Rain on Chennai, Flooding India’s IT Hub
Cyclone Michaung, a Severe Cyclonic Storm, crossed India’s south Andhra Pradesh coast near Bapatla on December 5, 2023, with sustained winds of 90–100 km/h. The storm reached its peak intensity a day earlier over the west-central Bay of Bengal with a central pressure of 986 hPa and maximum winds of 100 km/h. Before landfall, Michaung brought 530 mm of rainfall to Chennai between December 2 and 4, causing major flooding across Chennai, Kancheepuram, Chengalpattu, and Thiruvallur districts. The cyclone weakened into a well-marked low-pressure area over central India on December 6 after claiming at least 17 lives and causing $1.32 billion in damage.
From Depression to Cyclone: Michaung’s Five-Day Track Across the Bay
Michaung developed from a low-pressure system over the southern Bay of Bengal and was monitored as a tropical depression on November 30, 2023. The initial system was located near 7.5°N, 88.0°E with a central pressure of 1008 hPa before moving west-northwestward across the basin.
The system strengthened while moving over warm waters of the Bay of Bengal. On December 2, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) classified Michaung as a Deep Depression as the circulation became more organized near the southwestern Bay of Bengal. The system was upgraded to a Cyclonic Storm in the early morning at 0530 hours IST on December 3.
Michaung then moved toward the coastal waters off northern Tamil Nadu and southern Andhra Pradesh. The IMD issued escalating warnings for coastal districts, including Red Warning alerts for areas facing the highest risk of heavy rainfall and strong winds. Emergency preparations and evacuation measures were carried out in vulnerable coastal communities.
The cyclone’s track brought prolonged rainfall to northern Tamil Nadu before landfall. Chennai and surrounding districts received intense precipitation as rain bands associated with the circulation repeatedly affected the region.
The IMD classification sequence recorded Michaung’s development from Deep Depression on December 2 to Cyclonic Storm on December 3 and Severe Cyclonic Storm from December 4 to December 5. The cyclone remained below the threshold for a super cyclone, despite some inaccurate descriptions appearing in public reports. Light impacts were also reported in Bangladesh as the broader weather system affected parts of the region.
986 hPa and 100 km/h: Michaung Peaked Just Offshore Andhra Pradesh
Michaung reached its maximum strength on December 4, 2023, over the west-central Bay of Bengal near 14.0°N, 80.6°E. At peak intensity, the cyclone recorded a central pressure of 986 hPa and maximum sustained winds of 100 km/h according to IMD observations.
During this stage, Michaung was positioned offshore between Andhra Pradesh and northern Tamil Nadu. The storm intensified into an IMD Severe Cyclonic Storm while approaching the coastline, producing strong winds, heavy rainfall, and hazardous marine conditions.
The cyclone made landfall near Bapatla on the south Andhra Pradesh coast between 12:30 and 14:30 Indian Standard Time on December 5. The IMD recorded sustained winds of 90–100 km/h with gusts reaching around 110 km/h during the landfall period.
Coastal Andhra Pradesh experienced the strongest wind impacts after landfall. The cyclone damaged temporary structures, trees, electricity infrastructure, and agricultural areas across affected districts. Heavy rainfall continued as Michaung moved inland, increasing flood risks in low-lying locations.
The cyclone’s strongest winds were moderate compared with the most intense Bay of Bengal cyclones, but rainfall impacts extended across a much wider area. Chennai had already experienced severe flooding before landfall because Michaung’s circulation delivered persistent moisture over Tamil Nadu.
530 mm in Three Days: How Michaung Turned Chennai’s Streets Into Rivers
The most significant impact of Cyclone Michaung was the exceptional rainfall across the Chennai metropolitan region. Weather stations recorded extremely high totals during December 2–4, with Nungambakkam receiving 530 mm of rainfall and Meenambakkam recording 520 mm during the same period.
The intense rainfall overwhelmed drainage systems and flooded large parts of Chennai. Residential neighborhoods, roads, and transport networks were affected as water levels rose rapidly across the metropolitan area.
The heaviest impacts were reported in Chennai and nearby districts including Kancheepuram, Chengalpattu, and Thiruvallur. Floodwaters disrupted daily activities, damaged property, and caused power interruptions in several locations. Emergency teams carried out rescue operations as residents in heavily flooded areas required assistance.
Tamil Nadu recorded at least 17 deaths linked to the cyclone and flooding impacts. The disaster also produced significant economic losses, with total damage estimates reaching approximately $1.32 billion in 2023 U.S. dollars.
The cyclone’s rainfall pattern resulted from a slow-moving coastal system interacting with humid Bay of Bengal air. While wind damage remained concentrated near the landfall zone, rainfall impacts extended across a much wider urban and rural area.
Following the flooding, authorities carried out relief operations, including water removal, restoration of essential services, and assistance for affected communities. The cyclone’s impacts were concentrated in southern India, with Chennai experiencing the most severe urban flooding during the event.
From Severe Cyclone to Low-Pressure Area: Michaung’s Inland Decay
After crossing the Andhra Pradesh coast, Michaung weakened as it moved inland over southern India. The cyclone lost its oceanic energy source, and its circulation gradually weakened while interacting with land.
The system declined from Severe Cyclonic Storm intensity after landfall and continued weakening through December 5. It later became a deep depression and then a well-marked low-pressure area over central India on December 6.
The final best-track position placed Michaung near 18.3°N, 81.1°E at 06:00 UTC on December 6, 2023, with the system recorded as a weakening tropical depression. The cyclone lifecycle lasted from November 30 to December 6, covering formation over the Bay of Bengal, coastal intensification, Bapatla landfall, and inland dissipation.
