Severe Tropical Storm Damrey formed in the western North Pacific in late August 2023 and followed a northward track over open ocean before moving east of Japan. The cyclone was designated as Typhoon 2310 by the Japan Meteorological Agency and as 08W by the Joint Typhoon Warning Center during its monitoring period. Damrey reached its strongest stage on August 26 with maximum sustained winds of 50 knots and a central pressure of 985 hPa in the official regional analysis. The system later weakened and transitioned into an extratropical cyclone over the western North Pacific on August 29, ending its four-day tropical lifecycle.
Formation near Minamishima: Damrey’s Early Development in the Western Pacific
Damrey originated from a tropical depression over the western North Pacific south of Minamishima Island on August 21, 2023. The system developed far from the main population centers of East Asia, remaining over open waters throughout its tropical phase. International cyclone monitoring agencies tracked the disturbance as it gradually organized under favorable oceanic and atmospheric conditions.
The Japan Meteorological Agency, which serves as the Regional Specialized Meteorological Centre for tropical cyclones in the western North Pacific and South China Sea, issued official analyses and warnings for Damrey throughout its lifecycle. The agency’s role includes coordinating regional cyclone information and maintaining operational best-track records for storms affecting East Asia.
The Joint Typhoon Warning Center assigned the system the international identifier 08W as it developed. Damrey remained relatively weak during its initial days, with the circulation moving slowly across the western Pacific before strengthening into a named system.
By August 25, Damrey had intensified into a severe tropical storm according to regional classification standards. The storm moved northward across the Pacific while maintaining a compact circulation structure. Unlike many western Pacific cyclones that approach the Philippines, Taiwan, China, Vietnam, or the Japanese archipelago, Damrey stayed over open waters and did not make landfall.
Damrey developed at the same time as Typhoon Saola, creating a notable dual-cyclone pattern in the western North Pacific during late August 2023. Saola strengthened into a much more intense typhoon and later affected areas near the Philippines, southern China, Hong Kong, and surrounding coastal regions, while Damrey remained farther offshore. The simultaneous presence of Damrey and Saola marked an active late-August period for the western North Pacific basin.
Strengthening off Japan: Damrey’s Peak as a Severe Tropical Storm
Damrey peaked on August 26 as it moved north-northeastward off Japan’s eastern coast. At that time, the cyclone reached maximum sustained winds of 50 knots and a minimum central pressure of 985 hPa in the regional analysis, placing it at severe tropical storm intensity.
The storm continued moving toward higher latitudes while remaining over the Pacific Ocean east of Japan. Its strongest winds affected marine areas rather than densely populated coastal zones. Although Japan frequently experiences impacts from western Pacific tropical cyclones, Damrey’s offshore path kept the center away from direct land interaction.
The cyclone’s position east of Japan placed it within a region where tropical systems often begin interacting with mid-latitude weather patterns. Sea surface temperatures gradually decreased along its northward route, while stronger upper-level winds influenced the storm’s structure.
Damrey’s peak intensity was short-lived. After reaching its maximum strength, the cyclone began weakening as environmental conditions became less favorable for maintaining a warm-core tropical circulation. The storm continued tracking northeastward across the western North Pacific while gradually losing tropical characteristics.
The late August period of 2023 featured several active systems across East Asia and the western Pacific. While Damrey did not produce major coastal damage in China, the Philippines, Vietnam, or Japan, its evolution was monitored as part of the broader regional tropical cyclone activity during a busy period of the season.
Extratropical Transition over the Pacific: Damrey’s Final Transformation
After weakening east of Japan, Damrey continued moving across the western North Pacific and underwent a transition from a tropical cyclone into an extratropical cyclone on August 29. This process occurred as the storm entered a cooler marine environment and interacted with the larger-scale atmospheric circulation of the northern Pacific.
The transition marked the end of Damrey’s tropical phase. The cyclone no longer relied on the heat-driven structure of a tropical system and instead became associated with frontal and mid-latitude weather processes.
Following its transformation, Damrey continued moving eastward and northward over the Pacific. The system remained within the broader North Pacific circulation before dissipating as an organized cyclone on August 30, 2023.
Damrey’s complete lifecycle, from formation south of Minamishima Island to extratropical transition east of Japan, provided additional data for western North Pacific cyclone monitoring. The storm remained an offshore system, with no major landfall impacts reported across China, the Philippines, Vietnam, or Japan, while its track contributed to the seasonal record of tropical cyclone activity in 2023.
