Hurricane Ernesto 2024: Category 2 Storm Strikes Bermuda After Caribbean Sweep
Hurricane Ernesto was the fifth named storm and third hurricane of the 2024 Atlantic hurricane season, developing from a tropical wave that crossed the Atlantic in August.
The system became a tropical depression at 1200 UTC on 12 August and strengthened into Tropical Storm Ernesto six hours later east of the Leeward Islands.
Ernesto reached Category 2 intensity on 16 August with maximum sustained winds of 85 knots and a minimum central pressure of 967 mb over the western Atlantic.
The storm affected the northeastern Caribbean, Puerto Rico, and Bermuda with heavy rainfall, strong winds, coastal flooding concerns, and hazardous surf before transitioning into an extratropical cyclone on 20 August.
Genesis and Caribbean Passage: Ernesto’s Early Track Through the Leewards
Ernesto originated from a tropical wave that emerged from the coast of Africa on 7 August 2024. The disturbance initially showed limited organization, but thunderstorms gradually increased as the wave moved westward across the tropical Atlantic. By 10 August, a broad low-pressure area had formed, and improving convection allowed the system to organize further.
At 1200 UTC on 12 August, satellite imagery and aircraft observations confirmed the formation of a tropical depression about 390 nautical miles east of Guadeloupe. The cyclone strengthened into Tropical Storm Ernesto at 1800 UTC the same day as its circulation became better defined.
Ernesto moved west-northwestward under the influence of a subtropical ridge and approached the Leeward Islands. On 13 August, the storm passed near Guadeloupe with tropical storm conditions, bringing periods of heavy rain and gusty winds. The cyclone later moved across the northeastern Caribbean Sea and passed north of Puerto Rico.
Puerto Rico experienced heavy rainfall from Ernesto’s outer rainbands, with localized flooding concerns in vulnerable areas. The storm’s strongest winds were initially displaced from the center within a large rainband, a structure observed through radar and satellite data as Ernesto continued strengthening over open water.
After moving away from Puerto Rico, Ernesto entered an environment favorable for intensification. Warm ocean temperatures, sufficient atmospheric moisture, and relatively low wind shear supported the development of a more organized inner core. Aircraft data and microwave imagery indicated that an eyewall began forming on 14 August as Ernesto became a hurricane north of the Caribbean.
Peak Intensity Near Bermuda: Ernesto Strengthens to Category 2
Ernesto intensified after leaving the Caribbean and continued moving northward across the western Atlantic. The storm reached Category 2 hurricane strength on 16 August, when it was located near 28.9°N, 66.8°W. At peak intensity, Ernesto produced maximum sustained winds of 85 knots and recorded a minimum central pressure of 967 mb.
The hurricane maintained a well-defined circulation while approaching Bermuda. Forecast agencies monitored the storm’s track closely as hurricane-force winds, heavy rainfall, and dangerous marine conditions threatened the island. Bermuda’s emergency authorities prepared public safety measures, including coordination between government departments and weather officials.
Ernesto made landfall on Bermuda on 17 August 2024 as a Category 1 hurricane after weakening from its peak intensity. The island experienced strong winds, rainfall, and coastal hazards, while officials reported no major injuries or widespread catastrophic damage following the passage of the storm.
The storm also generated dangerous ocean conditions beyond its direct path. The National Hurricane Center reported that rip currents associated with Ernesto contributed to three deaths along the southeastern United States coastline. These fatalities occurred away from the center of the hurricane and were linked to hazardous surf conditions.
Ernesto’s strongest winds remained concentrated over the Atlantic, while its land impacts were shaped by the storm’s size, structure, and interaction with Bermuda. Coastal warnings remained in effect for tropical storm conditions and marine hazards along the U.S. East Coast.
North Atlantic Transition: Ernesto Becomes Post-Tropical Cyclone
After crossing Bermuda, Ernesto accelerated northeastward over the North Atlantic while gradually encountering cooler waters and changing atmospheric conditions. The storm weakened from hurricane intensity but maintained a broad circulation as it moved through higher latitudes.
On 18 August, Ernesto fluctuated in strength while moving across the open ocean. The cyclone continued producing large waves and dangerous marine conditions across parts of the western Atlantic. Its tropical structure gradually declined as interaction with mid-latitude weather systems increased.
By 20 August, Ernesto completed its transition into an extratropical cyclone over the North Atlantic. The transformation occurred after the storm moved into an environment where cooler ocean temperatures and frontal interactions replaced the conditions that had supported its tropical characteristics.
The final analyzed track placed Ernesto from its tropical origin near 14.4°N, 47.2°W through the Caribbean and western Atlantic before dissipation as an extratropical system near 49.7°N, 41.9°W. The cyclone’s analyzed lifetime extended from 12 August through 20 August 2024, with peak intensity recorded at 1200 UTC on 16 August near 28.9°N, 66.8°W.
