Tropical Storm GERT: Atlantic Cyclone That Regenerated Twice

Tropical Storm GERT formed on 19 August 2023 from a tropical wave that moved westward from the African coast into the Atlantic Ocean. The cyclone later weakened and regenerated after maintaining a persistent circulation over open waters. GERT caused no fatalities or damage. The storm reached peak intensity on 3 September with maximum sustained winds of 50 knots before dissipating on 4 September.

From Wave to Storm: How GERT Defied Forecast Models

GERT originated from a tropical wave that departed the west coast of Africa on 14 August 2023. The disturbance gradually organized and became a tropical depression on 19 August over the tropical Atlantic near 14.7°N, 46.6°W. During the following days, the system moved through an environment that limited development, with convection fluctuating around the circulation center.

By late August, GERT weakened significantly and degenerated into a surface trough on 26 August.
