During its early development, the cyclone passed east of the Mariana Islands and approached the region around the Ogasawara Islands, also known as the Bonin Islands. On September 26, the system strengthened into a tropical storm under the regional classification system used for western Pacific monitoring. The system experienced sporadic intensity fluctuations as its circulation adjusted to changing atmospheric conditions.
Jebi continued tracking northward across the Pacific east of Japan’s southern islands. The storm remained offshore and did not approach major population centers along Honshu, Japan’s largest island, or the nearby island communities. Forecast agencies continued tracking its movement because western Pacific cyclones can influence marine conditions and coastal weather patterns even without direct landfall.
The storm was officially designated Typhoon No. 17 (T2417) by Japan’s meteorological authorities during its mature phase. Under the Japanese classification system, Jebi progressed from a tropical depression into a tropical storm before reaching typhoon intensity over open waters east of Japan. Its track kept the strongest part of the circulation away from the Japanese coastline.
Peak Intensity East of Japan: Rapid Acceleration and Offshore Typhoon Transition
Jebi entered its strongest phase at the beginning of October as it moved northeastward over the Pacific east of Japan. On September 30, the system strengthened while located near 28.5°N and 140.8°E, then intensified into a typhoon on October 1.
The official best-track analysis recorded Jebi’s peak intensity at 0000 UTC on October 1, when the storm was positioned near 32.7°N and 141.6°E. The typhoon reached maximum sustained winds of 65 knots with a central pressure of 980 hPa. This intensity placed Jebi within the typhoon category while following a predominantly oceanic path.
At its strongest stage, Jebi moved through waters east of the Japanese archipelago rather than toward the coastline. The storm passed well away from the main islands, including Honshu, while maintaining a northeastward trajectory toward the higher latitudes of the North Pacific.
For Japan, operational attention focused on offshore wind, wave conditions, and potential indirect effects rather than a direct landfall threat. Although Jebi did not produce a major land disaster in Japan, China, the Philippines, or Vietnam, its offshore track demonstrated the value of persistent tracking for western Pacific storms.
