Typhoon Nakri Batters Japan’s Izu Islands, Damaging 220 Homes and Killing One
Typhoon Nakri (Typhoon No. 23) swept through Japan’s Izu Islands on October 13, damaging about 220 homes on Hachijojima and triggering landslides. The typhoon generated hazardous seas that claimed one life off the Pacific coast in Oiso, Kanagawa Prefecture, where three fishermen were swept away by rough waters. Nakri reached its peak intensity south of Japan with maximum sustained winds of 129 km/h according to Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) data, a central pressure of 970 hPa, and reported maximum instantaneous wind gusts of 180 km/h in JMA warnings. By October 15, Nakri had weakened into an extratropical cyclone over the North Pacific.
Open-Ocean Formation: Nakri Takes Shape East of the Philippines
Typhoon Nakri developed from a tropical depression over the western North Pacific on October 6, 2025, near 13.2°N and 147.4°E. At its formation stage, the circulation remained weak, with a central pressure of 1008 hPa and no significant winds recorded in the initial analysis. The disturbance gradually strengthened while moving northwestward over open waters east of the Philippine Sea.
By October 8, the system intensified into a tropical storm near 17.9°N and 138.6°E, with winds increasing to 64 km/h and the central pressure falling to 1004 hPa. Nakri continued organizing as it traveled northward, supported by warm ocean waters and an increasingly defined circulation structure.
The storm remained far from the Philippines and did not bring direct landfall impacts to the archipelago. Its track also kept it away from mainland China, Taiwan, Vietnam, and the Korean Peninsula, although regional authorities continued monitoring the cyclone because of the potential for changing tracks in the western Pacific.
From October 8 to October 11, Nakri maintained tropical storm intensity while gradually moving into higher latitudes. The storm’s pressure fluctuated during this period, but its circulation continued consolidating before entering its strongest development phase south of Japan.
Peak Intensity South of Japan: Hachijojima Bears the Brunt
Nakri strengthened into a typhoon on October 12 as it moved northeastward across the western Pacific. The cyclone reached its peak intensity on October 13 near 32.2°N and 138.3°E, with maximum sustained winds of 129 km/h according to JMA data and a minimum central pressure of 970 hPa. At this stage, the typhoon maintained a powerful circulation south of Japan, producing extreme winds and dangerous marine conditions.
Typhoon Nakri passed near the Izu Islands, where Hachijojima experienced the most significant impacts. Strong winds, intense rainfall, and landslides affected the island, while approximately 220 homes were damaged. The mountainous terrain of Hachijojima increased the risk of slope failures as heavy rain fell over areas already affected by previous severe weather.
Nakri arrived shortly after Typhoon Halong (Typhoon No. 22), which struck the same region on October 9 and 10. The back-to-back impacts, with Halong followed by Nakri’s arrival on October 13, left parts of the Izu Islands with weakened ground conditions and increased vulnerability to additional rainfall and wind damage. The combination of the two typhoons created a more difficult recovery environment for affected communities.
The typhoon generated hazardous seas that claimed lives offshore. Off the Pacific coast in Oiso, Kanagawa Prefecture, three fishermen were swept away by rough seas, with one confirmed dead. Maritime operations along Japan’s Pacific coast were disrupted as authorities warned of dangerous ocean conditions.
Although Nakri did not make landfall on Japan’s main islands, its large circulation affected coastal areas through strong winds, high waves, and heavy precipitation. The event highlighted the risks posed by offshore typhoons approaching Japan’s island territories during the late autumn season.
North Pacific Recurve: Nakri Loses Tropical Characteristics
After reaching peak strength south of Japan, Nakri continued moving northeastward over the Pacific Ocean while maintaining typhoon intensity. On October 14, the cyclone remained a typhoon near 34.8°N and 151.2°E, with maximum sustained winds near 129 km/h and a central pressure of 970 hPa.
As Nakri moved farther east, the storm encountered cooler waters and stronger interaction with the mid-latitude atmospheric circulation. These conditions gradually weakened the warm-core structure that defines a tropical cyclone.
On October 15, Nakri completed its transition into an extratropical cyclone near 35.5°N and 170.2°E. The transformation ended its tropical cyclone phase, but the remaining system continued moving across the North Pacific before dissipating on October 16 near 39.3°N and 183.9°E.
The extratropical transition followed a common pattern among western Pacific typhoons that recurve toward higher latitudes. These systems often lose tropical characteristics while continuing to influence weather patterns over the open ocean.
Nakri’s 10-Day Lifecycle: From Disturbance to Extratropical Storm
Nakri’s lifecycle lasted from October 6 to October 16, covering ten days from tropical depression formation to final dissipation. The storm traveled across the western North Pacific, strengthening from a weak disturbance into a typhoon before entering the mid-latitude environment.
The cyclone’s strongest phase was recorded south of Japan, where it reached a central pressure of 970 hPa, maximum sustained winds of 129 km/h according to JMA data, and maximum instantaneous gusts of 180 km/h reported in JMA warnings. These figures underscored a late-season typhoon that, despite remaining offshore, produced concentrated destruction across Japan’s island territories.
For East Asian coastal regions, Nakri’s most notable impacts were concentrated in Japan’s Izu Islands and nearby Pacific waters. The Philippines, China, and Vietnam avoided direct landfall effects because the storm maintained a northward and northeastward track away from those coastlines.
The final JMA analysis placed Nakri in the North Pacific as an extratropical cyclone on October 16, 2025, completing the recorded evolution of Typhoon No. 23 from formation to dissipation.
