Tropical Cyclone Enala was a short-lived but well-observed system in the South-West Indian Ocean during February 2023, becoming the seventh named storm of the season monitored by the Regional Specialised Meteorological Centre in Réunion. The system developed over remote waters and reached tropical cyclone intensity before weakening without making landfall. Enala remained over open ocean waters throughout its lifecycle, posing no direct threat to any populated area. From Depression to Storm: Enala Takes Shape Over Remote Waters

Enala began as a developing tropical disturbance over the South-West Indian Ocean in February 2023, with early circulation signs appearing over open waters. Initial best-track analyses identified a tropical depression phase before the system strengthened into a named storm under the monitoring responsibility of RSMC La Réunion.

The cyclone moved generally westward and then southward during its early development stage, remaining well away from the coastlines of Madagascar and the Mascarene Islands. According to operational monitoring from RSMC La Réunion, the system was designated Tropical Storm Enala as its organization improved and convection became concentrated around the circulation center.

At peak intensity, Enala produced maximum sustained winds of approximately 135 km/h, with IBTrACS best-track analysis recording a minimum central pressure of about 984 mb. The cyclone reached this strength near the southern Indian Ocean waters around 19°S latitude and approximately 71°E longitude on 23 February.

The peak period was brief. Enala’s structure showed a well-defined tropical cyclone circulation, but the system soon encountered conditions that limited further strengthening. After reaching maximum intensity, Enala began a gradual weakening trend. By 24 February, wind speeds had declined while the cyclone continued moving southward. The system remained a tropical cyclone over the ocean but no longer maintained the peak organization observed during its strongest phase.

Following its peak on 23 February, Enala entered a steady weakening phase as it traveled farther south across the Indian Ocean. The cyclone’s wind speeds decreased from tropical cyclone strength, and its central pressure gradually rose as the circulation lost energy.

On 24 February, Enala weakened while located over open waters south of its peak position. By 25 and 26 February, the system continued drifting southward and eastward, maintaining tropical storm characteristics but showing signs of declining organization.

The weakening became more pronounced near the end of February. Enala’s convection became less concentrated, and the cyclone gradually transitioned into a weaker tropical system.
