Mozambique Channel Formation: Alvaro Intensifies to 1000 hPa by December 31
Cyclone Alvaro developed from a tropical disturbance over the southwestern Indian Ocean near the Mozambique Channel on December 30, 2023. The system was monitored by the Regional Specialized Meteorological Centre in La Réunion, operated by Météo-France (MFR), which is responsible for official tropical cyclone analysis and warnings in the South-West Indian Ocean basin.
Initial analysis placed Alvaro near 19.2°S, 34.9°E, with tropical depression characteristics and a central pressure of approximately 1007 hPa. The circulation moved eastward across the Mozambique Channel, gradually organizing as convection developed around the center. By December 31, MFR classified the system as a Moderate Tropical Storm, with winds increasing to around 70 km/h and central pressure falling to approximately 1000 hPa.
During the first hours of January 2024, Alvaro continued strengthening while moving toward Madagascar. Post-analysis data from international cyclone monitoring records, including IBTrACS, showed increasing wind speeds and falling pressure as the storm approached the island. On January 1, Alvaro reached its maximum intensity near 21.5°S, 42.7°E, with a minimum central pressure of 982 hPa and maximum sustained winds of 33.4 m/s, or 120 km/h.
Météo Madagascar issued weather warnings for coastal districts as Alvaro approached the island. Forecast information highlighted risks from strong winds, heavy rainfall, and coastal impacts, allowing local authorities to coordinate emergency preparations before the cyclone reached land.
Madagascar Landfall on January 1: 982 hPa Peak with 120 km/h Winds
Alvaro made landfall in Morombe District, southwestern Madagascar, on January 1, 2024, as a severe tropical storm near its peak intensity. The cyclone brought strong winds and heavy rainfall to western and southern parts of the country, affecting residential areas, infrastructure, and public services along its path.
The Bureau National de Gestion des Risques et des Catastrophes (BNGRC) coordinated disaster response operations following the storm. Official assessments recorded 4,543 affected people, 401 displaced residents, and 19 fatalities linked to the cyclone’s impacts. Damage reports included destroyed and damaged homes, impacts on schools, and disruption to transportation networks in affected districts.
Rainfall associated with Alvaro produced localized flooding and access problems in several communities. Emergency teams worked with local authorities to provide assistance to displaced families and assess damage after the cyclone crossed southwestern Madagascar.
After crossing the island, Alvaro moved back over the Indian Ocean near the southeastern coast of Madagascar on January 3. The system maintained tropical storm characteristics during part of its offshore movement, with post-analysis data showing winds near 74 km/h and a central pressure around 997 hPa.
MFR continued monitoring the system as it moved away from Madagascar and weakened over the southern Indian Ocean.
Post-Tropical Transition: Alvaro Weakens to 1007 hPa by January 6
After leaving Madagascar, Alvaro tracked southeastward across the southern Indian Ocean while gradually losing tropical cyclone characteristics. On January 4, the system remained a tropical storm over open waters, with recorded winds near 83 km/h and a central pressure of approximately 992 hPa.
The cyclone weakened further as it moved into higher latitudes. By January 5, Alvaro had declined into a tropical depression near 30.8°S, 62.4°E, with a less organized circulation and reduced convection.
MFR analysis classified the system as transitioning into a post-tropical depression on January 4. The remaining low-pressure circulation continued moving across the ocean before dissipating completely on January 6, 2024.
Final track analysis placed the dissipating system near 30.1°S, 67.9°E, with winds of approximately 46 km/h and a central pressure of 1007 hPa. Alvaro’s lifecycle lasted from December 30, 2023, to January 6, 2024, with a peak intensity of 982 hPa and 120 km/h maximum sustained winds on January 1, 2024.
