Second South Pacific Cyclone in a Week, Osai Fades Without Major Landfall
Tropical Cyclone Osai formed in the South Pacific on 6 February 2024 as the second named cyclone in the basin within one week of activity. The Fiji Meteorological Service (FMS), operating as the Regional Specialized Meteorological Centre (RSMC) Nadi, classified Osai as a Category 1 Tropical Cyclone during its peak phase. Osai reached maximum sustained winds of 50–51 knots, approximately 93 km/h, with a minimum central pressure of 992 hPa near 7 February 18:00 UTC. The cyclone remained offshore and produced no documented major land impacts across the South Pacific island region.
From Disturbance to Named Storm: Osai Takes Shape Near the Samoan Islands
Tropical Cyclone Osai developed from a tropical disturbance in the South Pacific near 9.0°S, 176.0°W on 6 February 2024. The system formed in an area of warm tropical waters where sufficient moisture and atmospheric instability supported the gradual organization of a closed circulation.
The early stages of Osai were monitored through regional forecasting networks, with RSMC Nadi in Fiji responsible for official tropical cyclone analysis and warnings in the Southwest Pacific region. The Fiji Meteorological Service applies the Category 1–5 tropical cyclone intensity system for storms that reach cyclone strength within its warning area.
Initial analysis showed Osai strengthening from a tropical depression during 6 February. At 06:00 UTC, the system had winds near 25 knots and a central pressure around 1005 hPa. By 12:00 UTC, winds increased to approximately 30 knots as pressure fell to near 1000 hPa.
The system reached tropical cyclone classification later on 6 February as its circulation became better organized. RSMC Nadi identified Osai as a developing tropical cyclone while it moved southeastward through the South Pacific. The storm’s position remained well away from major island groups, reducing the likelihood of direct impacts despite its rapid transition into a named system.
Osai became the second tropical cyclone of the week in the South Pacific basin, following another period of active tropical development in the region. However, unlike stronger systems that have affected Fiji, Vanuatu, Samoa, and other Pacific island nations, Osai remained over open waters throughout its lifecycle.
Category 1 Strength Achieved Briefly Before Environmental Shift
Osai reached its strongest intensity near 17.4°S, 165.0°W on 7 February 2024. Around 18:00 UTC, the cyclone reached Category 1 Tropical Cyclone strength under the Fiji Meteorological Service classification, with maximum sustained winds of 50–51 knots and a minimum central pressure of approximately 992 hPa.
The cyclone’s peak represented a short period of organization as its central circulation became stronger. Before reaching this intensity, Osai experienced fluctuations in strength, briefly weakening and then rebuilding during 7 February. The storm’s peak winds were approximately 93 km/h, placing it at the lowest level of the South Pacific Category 1 classification.
After reaching maximum intensity, Osai began weakening as atmospheric conditions became less favorable. Changes in surrounding wind patterns and reduced support for deep convection contributed to the decline in organization around the cyclone center.
RSMC Nadi’s monitoring showed that Osai never developed into a severe tropical cyclone. The system did not reach Category 2 or higher intensity, and its strongest phase remained brief. The cyclone’s movement across the central South Pacific kept it distant from populated islands, and no major warnings for destructive impacts were issued.
The Fiji Meteorological Service continued tracking Osai through its weakening stage, using satellite observations, numerical guidance, and regional analysis methods consistent with South Pacific tropical cyclone forecasting procedures.
Downgraded to Depression: Osai’s Final Hours Over Open Water
Following its Category 1 peak, Osai entered a weakening phase on 8 February 2024. The cyclone moved southeastward while its wind field weakened and its central pressure gradually increased. By early 8 February, the system had declined from tropical cyclone intensity to a tropical depression.
At 00:00 UTC on 8 February, Osai was located near 17.7°S, 164.6°W, with winds reduced to around 35 knots and pressure near 995 hPa. Later observations showed further weakening, with the system losing the organized structure required to maintain tropical cyclone status.
By 12:00 UTC on 8 February, Osai had weakened significantly near 18.8°S, 163.3°W. Wind speeds had decreased to approximately 25 knots, and the central pressure had risen to around 999 hPa. Some datasets list the final stages slightly differently, with certain analyses extending the system’s remnants into 9 February, but the main operational lifecycle ended during 8 February.
The cyclone dissipated over the South Pacific without making landfall or generating documented major damage. No significant reports of destructive winds, storm surge, or widespread flooding were associated with Osai in Pacific island communities.
The final analyzed track placed Osai between approximately 9°S and 19°S latitude and 164°W to 176°W longitude, keeping the entire system within the South Pacific basin under RSMC Nadi’s monitoring responsibility. RSMC Nadi’s final advisory placed the remnant low near 18.8°S, 163.7°W before it dissipated over open waters on 8 February.
