Tropical Cyclone Paul, designated 13U within the Australian region, developed from a tropical low near the eastern waters of Papua New Guinea on 9 April 2024. The initial circulation formed near 10.5°S, 152.4°E, where weak organization gradually increased as convection consolidated around the center.
The Bureau of Meteorology’s Tropical Cyclone Warning Centre monitored Paul throughout its lifecycle as the system moved away from the Papua New Guinea region and into the Coral Sea. Early analysis showed a developing tropical depression with winds of about 27 km/h and a central pressure near 1010 hPa. The system remained compact, with most weather activity concentrated around the developing circulation rather than spreading widely across the surrounding ocean.
Paul strengthened steadily during 10 April as the circulation tracked southeastward. Wind speeds increased as thunderstorms consolidated around the low-level center. By 1800 UTC on 10 April, Paul had reached tropical cyclone intensity, with winds of approximately 64 km/h and a central pressure near 1000 hPa.
The cyclone continued moving through the Coral Sea while remaining well offshore from Queensland. Coastal areas of northern Australia, including Cape York Peninsula, did not experience direct cyclone impacts from Paul. Paul was the eighth and one of the final named systems of Australia’s 2023–24 tropical cyclone season.
Peak Intensity Over the Coral Sea: Paul Briefly Reaches Category 2
Paul reached its strongest stage on 11 April 2024 near 14.2°S, 155.2°E. At this point, the cyclone recorded maximum sustained winds of 92 km/h and a central pressure of 994 hPa. Under the Australian tropical cyclone intensity scale, this represented Category 2 intensity.
Paul strengthened rapidly, reaching its peak less than two days after being identified as a tropical depression. The cyclone maintained its compact structure while passing through the central Coral Sea, where warm ocean waters supported continued convection around the core.
Although Paul reached Category 2 intensity on the Australian scale, its strongest winds remained over open ocean. The system’s limited size and offshore track reduced the risk of destructive coastal effects for Australia and nearby South Pacific island communities. No significant damage reports were associated with Paul from Queensland, Papua New Guinea, or surrounding island regions.
The cyclone began weakening after its peak as environmental conditions became less favorable. Satellite observations showed a decline in the organization of the central convection, while the circulation gradually lost the structure that had supported its brief period of maximum intensity.

After reaching peak intensity, Paul weakened as increasing wind shear disrupted the cyclone’s upper-level outflow and affected the alignment between the surface circulation and thunderstorms. Dry air intrusion also reduced the deep convection needed to maintain cyclone strength.
By 11 April, Paul’s winds had decreased from their peak while the system continued moving across the Coral Sea. The cyclone shifted away from its earlier southeastward movement and later turned toward the northwest as the circulation became shallower and weaker.
At 0000 UTC on 12 April, Paul had weakened into a tropical depression with winds near 46 km/h and a central pressure of 1002 hPa. The remaining low-level circulation continued over open water before dissipating on 12 April near 13.4°S, 153.6°E.
Paul’s short lifecycle added to the observational record of compact cyclone behavior in the Australian region. The system formed, intensified, and weakened within approximately three days, demonstrating how quickly Coral Sea disturbances can evolve when atmospheric conditions briefly support tropical development.

The Bureau of Meteorology officially recorded Paul as a tropical cyclone from 9 to 12 April 2024, with its peak intensity registered on 11 April before the system dissolved over the Coral Sea. The cyclone’s final analyzed position was near 13.4°S, 153.6°E, after completing its offshore track without recorded land impacts.
