Tropical Storm Hector was a short-lived eastern Pacific cyclone that developed in late August 2024 and remained far offshore throughout its life cycle. The system coalesced from a tropical disturbance southwest of Mexico, then tracked westward across the open Pacific. Hector reached peak intensity on 27 August 2024 with maximum sustained winds of 50 kt while positioned over open waters. No coastal watches or warnings were issued, and no fatalities or damage were reported in association with the storm.

Formation South of Mexico: Hector’s Remote Track Across the Eastern Pacific

Hector developed within the eastern Pacific basin during an active period of tropical cyclone monitoring. The disturbance’s origins traced back to the same tropical wave that spawned Hurricane Ernesto in the Atlantic. After the wave contributed to Ernesto’s development, the remaining low-level energy became difficult to track before reappearing over the eastern Pacific with renewed convection.

A low-pressure system became better organized on 22 August 2024 over the eastern Pacific. The system moved westward for several days while gradually developing stronger convection and a more defined circulation. At 0600 UTC on 25 August, it became a tropical depression approximately 695 nautical miles southwest of the southern tip of the Baja California peninsula.

The system was classified as a tropical depression before it strengthened into Tropical Storm Hector later on 25 August. The cyclone’s early development was monitored through satellite observations, including infrared imagery, microwave data, and scatterometer measurements that helped identify its structure over the remote ocean.

Hector moved generally westward under the influence of surrounding steering currents.
