Tropical Storm Ileana: A Retrospective Analysis
Formation and Meteorological History
Tropical Storm Ileana originated from a tropical wave that departed the west coast of Africa on August 25, 2024. The wave traversed the Atlantic, crossed the Caribbean, and split over the Yucatan Peninsula. The northern portion contributed to the formation of Tropical Storm Francine in the Gulf of Mexico, while the southern part emerged into the Eastern Pacific on September 8. Interacting with the monsoon trough, the disturbance gradually organized into a tropical depression by 1200 UTC September 12, about 140 nautical miles southwest of Cabo Corrientes, Mexico. Six hours later, it strengthened into Tropical Storm Ileana.
Ileana moved north-northwestward over warm waters (30–31°C) toward the Baja California Peninsula. It reached an initial peak of 40 knots (45 mph) by September 13 but struggled to intensify due to dry air and weak upper-level divergence. The storm turned northward through a break in the subtropical ridge, passing very near Cabo Pulmo (within 10 nautical miles) around 0000 UTC September 14. Despite its proximity, tropical-storm-force winds remained offshore due to an asymmetric wind field. Later on September 14, Ileana slowed over the southern Gulf of California and achieved its peak intensity of 45 knots (52 mph) at 1800 UTC, while centered about 30 nautical miles south-southeast of Los Mochis, Sinaloa. The center came within a few nautical miles of Isla de San Ignacio near Topolobampo. However, increasing southwesterly shear stripped convection from the low-level center, causing it to abruptly turn westward. By 0600 UTC September 15, Ileana degenerated into a remnant low over the Gulf of California, about 20 nautical miles southwest of Los Mochis, without making landfall.
Impact and Damages
Ileana primarily affected the coasts of extreme southern Baja California Sur and northern Sinaloa, Mexico. The storm brought heavy rainfall of 4–8 inches (100–200 mm) to the Baja California Peninsula and similar amounts to Sinaloa, leading to localized flooding and mudslides. The popular resort town of Cabo San Lucas experienced hours of heavy rain and gusty winds. Rip currents posed a high threat along the coastline. However, due to the storm's asymmetric wind field, sustained tropical-storm-force winds remained offshore, limiting wind damage. No casualties were reported, and economic losses were minimal compared to major hurricanes. The storm's remnants injected limited moisture into the Desert Southwest and Texas, but no significant impacts occurred in the United States.
Government Response and Relief Efforts
Mexican authorities issued tropical storm warnings and watches for Baja California Sur and the coast of Sinaloa. Local emergency services in Cabo San Lucas and Los Mochis prepared shelters and advised residents to secure property. The National Hurricane Center provided regular advisories. Post-storm, cleanup operations were swift, and no major relief efforts were required. The storm served as a reminder of the 2023 Hurricane Otis disaster, though Ileana's impacts were far less severe.
