Tropical Storm Raymond Lashes Mexico Coast with Severe Rain and Waves
Tropical Storm Raymond pounded southwestern Mexico with torrential rain and high seas in early October 2025, inundating coastal roads from Guerrero to Jalisco. Gusty tropical-storm-force winds downed trees and power lines, while locally heavy rainfall triggered flash floods and mudslides. Official data confirmed peak sustained winds of 50 knots (60 mph) and a minimum central pressure of 998 mb as the storm hugged the Pacific coastline.
Monsoon Trough Genesis: Raymond's Formation and Offshore Track
The precursor to Raymond emerged within the eastern North Pacific monsoon trough several hundred nautical miles off southern Mexico on October 1. Initially, outflow from Hurricane Priscilla to the west suppressed deep convection. After Priscilla weakened and moved north, thunderstorm activity redeveloped along the coast on October 8. An OSCAT-3 scatterometer pass and ship reports from Norwegian Joy led to the system being designated a tropical depression at 0600 UTC October 9, about 75 n mi southeast of Acapulco. It became Tropical Storm Raymond six hours later.
Steered by a mid-level ridge over northern Mexico, Raymond moved west-northwestward at 10–15 kt. Very warm sea-surface temperatures and strong upper-level divergence offset the persistent easterly vertical shear, allowing gradual intensification.
Peak Intensity: 50-kt Winds and Heavy Swells on the Southwest Coast
From 0600 to 1200 UTC on October 10, Tropical Storm Raymond reached its peak intensity of 50 kt (60 mph) with a minimum central pressure of 998 mb while paralleling the southwestern Mexican coast. A tropical storm warning was issued from Zihuatanejo to Cabo Corrientes. Large waves caused beach erosion and hazardous maritime conditions.
Rainbands produced heavy rainfall around Zihuatanejo and adjacent areas of Guerrero and Michoacán, resulting in urban flooding. Debris slides briefly closed sections of coastal highways; emergency crews carried out clearing operations and restored power to affected neighborhoods.
Dissipation near Baja California: Remnant Low and Northward Moisture Flux
After its peak, Raymond encountered stronger easterly shear and drier mid-level air. Its deep convection became displaced from the center, and it weakened into a post-tropical remnant low by 1800 UTC October 11 near the southern tip of the Baja California peninsula.
The remnant low crossed the peninsula's southern tip and briefly emerged over the southern Gulf of California before dissipating by 1800 UTC October 12 near Los Mochis. The remaining tropical moisture streamed northward into northwestern Mexico and parts of the southwestern United States.
