Severe Tropical Cyclone Neville was the sixth named system of the 2023–24 Australian tropical cyclone season, after spending nearly two weeks as a tropical low in the eastern Indian Ocean. The system formed on 7 March 2024 within the Australian region and later crossed 90°E into the responsibility area of the La Réunion Regional Specialized Meteorological Centre. Neville reached peak strength on 21 March as a category 4 severe tropical cyclone, with maximum sustained winds of 212 km/h and a central pressure of 947 hPa. Its strongest winds remained over open water, while earlier stages affected the Cocos (Keeling) Islands and Christmas Island with damaging winds, rough seas, coastal erosion, and inundation.

Severe Tropical Cyclone Neville began as a tropical low on 7 March 2024 in the eastern Indian Ocean, approximately 800 km west-northwest of the Cocos (Keeling) Islands. After passing through the region north of Western Australia, Neville entered a slower phase during the middle of March. Neville's two-week gestation as a tropical low set it apart from typical seasonal systems. The system spent an unusually long period in a developing stage before finally organizing into a named cyclone, creating a transition from a disorganized monsoon disturbance into a powerful severe tropical cyclone.

Severe Tropical Cyclone Neville reached tropical cyclone intensity on 20 March 2024 while positioned offshore northwest of Western Australia. The Bureau of Meteorology officially named Neville at 2:50 pm WST on 20 March, as the system strengthened over the eastern Indian Ocean.

As wind shear eased and ocean heat content rose, Neville underwent rapid intensification. Within 48 hours, the system strengthened from a tropical cyclone into a category 4 severe tropical cyclone under the Australian classification system. The cyclone developed a much better-defined circulation, with stronger convection wrapping around the centre.

Severe Tropical Cyclone Neville reached its peak intensity near 17.8°S and 104.2°E on 21 March 2024. At its strongest point, the cyclone produced maximum winds of 212 km/h and recorded a central pressure of 947 hPa. The system continued tracking westward over open ocean, allowing the core of the cyclone to maintain its strength away from populated coastlines.

The cyclone’s peak occurred well offshore, preventing a direct landfall in Western Australia.
